鈥淲e've seen a tremendous increase in ambition around AI projects in Europe鈥 - Arthur Mensch, Co-Founder & CEO of Mistral AI during Tuesday鈥檚 opening keynote听
Thursday 6 March
鈥淚f we鈥檙e talking about AI, it鈥檚 not just about connectivity anymore, it鈥檚 shifting towards the decisions that AI enable鈥听
Camille Mendler, Chief Analyst, Omdia during the 秀秀直播: What did we learn? session听
What a week, eh? It鈥檚 been another unforgettable event in Barcelona, and today鈥檚 Exhibition Halls and 4YFN zone were as busy and buzzing as ever.听
With the distance between Hall 1 and Hall 8 approximately 1 kilometre, 27,000 was the record daily step-count from one (extremely fit) member of the GSMA PR Team, roughly equivalent to walking the vertical length of Manhattan. Think you can beat us? Write in and we might just give you a prize.听
听
Hands up, who knows the answer?听
A sense of nail-biting anticipation preceded the final session on the Johnson Stage titled 秀秀直播: What did we learn? Would the answer be, 鈥業f you must stand still on the travelator, do it on the right-hand side鈥? Turns out, no.听听
Peter Jarich, Head of , hosted a panel of analysts with far more pertinent topics to discuss than travelator etiquette. For them, the big winners of MWC included an expected nod to AI, particularly an increase in practical use cases. Another standout was the increasing number of partnerships between vendors, signalling a shift to an even more collaborative industry.听
Looking ahead to next year鈥檚 MWC, the analysts want to see more real-life examples of AI in action, particularly those that demonstrate real commercial value. Other predictions included a more mature app ecosystem, and also how brands can adapt their services and products to older (yet fully digital-native) generations.听
听
Scoring goals for cultural connection听
On the Connected Industries stage, the Sports and Entertainment Summit kicked off with a look into how the Deutsche Fu脽ball Liga (DFL) engages its one billion fans worldwide.听
An interesting side topic was football鈥檚 wider role and responsibility on society and culture. 鈥淪ports is really the only global language, which can unify people and culture,鈥 said Peer Naubert, DFL鈥檚 CMO, as he looked forward to a future less dominated by geopolitical tension and uncertainty, with football and the DFL 鈥減laying a small and humble role in making this world a better place鈥.听听

And the awards go to...听
The Banco Sabadell Stage was literally on fire during last night鈥檚 4YFN Awards ceremony, pyros lighting up the audience as Colombian startup Bankuish was announced as this year鈥檚 winner, following an intense live pitching competition with four other finalists in front of a panel of investors. The prize for Bankuish and its CEO Jos茅 Fern谩ndez? A juicy $20,000 cheque and the knowledge you鈥檝e just won the world鈥檚 greatest startup competition.听
Then we had the GLOMOs, this year celebrating its 30th anniversary. A new category: Marketing Excellence, saw two awards added: Best Event Activation, won by Orange. And the CMO Marketing Campaign Award, which went to VEON. Shout out to presenter Lara Dewar (CMO at the GSMA), who absolutely shone onstage in a hot-pink power suit.听听

听
What鈥檚 on the MWC menu?听
There was a bigger range of food than ever before at MWC 鈥 from pok茅 bowls to pad Thai, tapas to toasted sandwiches. A standout was Gonzalez&Co serving up delicious Mexican food in 4YFN 鈥 鈥淭he guac wasn鈥檛 just avocado. It was chunky鈥, explained one satisfied customer.听
A final note from the GSMA听
鈥淎ll of us here at MWC know very well that the mobile ecosystem is a powerful driver of economic growth and social progress... forward-looking frameworks are essential to fostering innovation, to encouraging investment and, critically, to bridging digital divides.鈥 John Guisti, Chief Regulatory Officer, GSMA听

鈥淸AI] is the ability to put a cape on every human to make them a superhuman. And I think that's the real power... but at the moment, it's a very little cape on a very big human.鈥
Sachin Dev Duggal, Founder & Chief Wizard, Builder.ai during 秀秀直播鈥檚听penultimate keynote
鈥Everybody,听in a moment of weakness, can get scammed鈥
Scammers were top of the agenda at GSMA SEC CON this morning, with MD of Global Anti Scam Alliance Jorij Abraham鈥檚 warning also accompanied by the stark reveal that, globally, $1.03 trillion has been stolen by scammers in last 12 months.听
The expert panel collectively called for more cooperation, collaboration and trust across borders and sectors, with Toby Evans, Head of Economic Crime, APN, explaining, 鈥淭he impact on victims, business and the global economy cannot be understated.鈥
Teresa Walsh, Chief Intelligence Officer at FS-ISAC warned, 鈥淲e鈥檙e all still trying to figure out how to work together, while the bad guys are growing and extending鈥, while Tal Goldstein of the WEF said, 鈥淔or two years now in Davos, we鈥檝e had discussions about scams, fraud and phishing鈥, adding that 鈥渧ictims are not equipped any more to deal with these criminals. We need different stakeholders to take on more of the burden.鈥
And the 鈥楤est in Show鈥 GLOMO Award goes to鈥
There were smiles all round as John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA Ltd., approached the Xiaomi stand in Hall 3. This year鈥檚 GLOMO winner for Best in Show? Xiaomi鈥檚 newly launched 15 Ultra phone. Featuring a Leica Summilux optical lens and HyperAI technology, the phone鈥檚 sleek design and immersive micro-bezel display made it a clear winner in the Device category, which celebrates听consumer-focused technology innovation, design excellence, outstanding performance and market leadership. See all the GLOMO Awards听here.
Highlights from the exhibition floor
As the week draws to a close and the crowds begin to thin, now鈥檚 the perfect time to take a wander around the Exhibition Halls if you haven鈥檛 already. Here are our top picks:
听
- How鈥檚 your game? At the IBM stand in Hall 2, pick up a paddle or grab a handle 鈥 but beware, the table football and ping pong are hiding an AI twist. With a nifty sensor in the balls, IBM tracks your fu脽ball tekkers and table tennis skills, matching your playing style to a Sevilla FC player or tennis pro. The table tennis tracker even gives you AI-powered recommendations on how to improve your game.
- Sky-high police tech:听In Hall 6, the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalonia鈥檚 autonomous police force) were showcasing their latest Judge Dredd-style squad car, complete with a drone built into the vehicle鈥檚 roof. The drone is attachable and can be retracted and launched at speed, giving the officers an almost-instant bird鈥檚 eye view of their surroundings, often without the need for someone to manually operate it.
- The unbreakable phone:听IIIF150 produces so-called 鈥榬ugged鈥 phones 鈥 and after visiting their stand in Hall 1, we can鈥檛 help but agree. From devices fully submerged in sand and water, to one handset completely encased in ice, these phones are as tough as getting a ticket to the Spanish King鈥檚 royal dinner.
- Commuting in style:听A popular stand in Hall 2, hop on the Ericsson tram to see (literally) how the newest range of AR glasses (specifically the XREAL Air 2 Ultra) could transform your commute. Pop the glasses on and watch a movie, catch a football match, or do some work 鈥 all while remaining aware of your immediate physical surroundings so you don鈥檛 miss your stop.
- Meals on wheels:听KDDI鈥檚 autonomous vehicle is still in its pilot phase (rolling out in Japan soon), but has some cool potential use cases, including autonomous taxi services and moving convenience stores. Take a look in Hall 4.

Can dying languages be saved by AI?
According to UNESCO, a language is doomed to extinction every two weeks. That鈥檚 the impetus behind the development of听 鈥 a new AI model aiming to preserve the Kazakh language. Head to the GSMA Pavilion in Hall 4 to learn more about the project and see how KazLLM plays an important role in safeguarding Kazakhstani cultural heritage.
Pet spot
Pets at MWC? We must be barking mad, right? Believe us though, our pawed pals (both real and artificial) have actually made appearances at this year鈥檚 MWC. From robot dance dogs at the Samsung booth to smart litter trays at Xiaomi鈥檚 pet corner, and uCloudlink鈥檚 announcement of the听 to a real-life French Bulldog last spotted roaming with its owner in Hall 4 鈥 even our furriest friends have a place at MWC.
A word from the GSMA
鈥淎s you walk around MWC this week, there is no denying the incredible impact that connectivity has on our lives. It has truly transformed the way that we live and work and interact with each other.鈥 -听Lara Dewar, CMO, the GSMA

Fireside chat with Apple Co-Founder, Steve Wozniak听听听
Steve Wozniak鈥檚 eagerly anticipated appearance at was standing room only. The crowd, already large from listening to Athina Kanioura of PepsiCo and Stephen Hood of Mozilla, filled the venue as they awaited Wozniak鈥檚 arrival.听
He covered various topics, from building tech as a child: 鈥淵ou cannot get a driver鈥檚 licence at 10 years old, but you can get a 鈥榟am鈥 radio licence!鈥, to Elon Musk鈥檚 politics: 鈥淲hen you run a business you look for consensus and sharing鈥 I don鈥檛 like what鈥檚 going on in this regard鈥, to AI regulation: 鈥淵ou should have citations鈥 you could see where on the internet it came from and that would help you judge better鈥.听
Tech game-changers converge on the mainstage听
The morning鈥檚 keynote opened with a wave and a wink from robot 鈥楧igit鈥, showing its utility on the factory floor as it obeyed live commands from Agility Robotics CEO Peggy Johnson. For her, the next evolution will be introducing robots into the home environment, but she was quick to stress that 鈥渟afety is the number one challenge right now for humanoid robotics鈥.听
Also onstage was Lenovo鈥檚 CEO Yuanqing Yang, discussing the potential of personal AI twins that use your experiences to mirror your reasoning, and the rise of AI PCs (he predicted 80% of PCs will be AI PCs in the next three years).听
Arthur Mensch of Mistral AI called for greater European ambition (but also pragmatism) when reducing the continent鈥檚 reliability on US technology. He also drew attention to an overlooked opportunity for telcos to 鈥渋nvest in data centres and become hyperscalers鈥.听
Global AI rivalry intensifying?听
Geopolitics has been a prevailing topic across many of this week鈥檚 sessions. On the Johnson Stage, experts discussed AI development during Trump鈥檚 second term and its impact on European and global markets.听
The issue of regulation versus innovation was front and centre, with CEO and Co-Founder of Hyacinth AI Mark Somol stressing there鈥檚 鈥渘o question that this Trump administration is focused on money and power鈥 and that benefits from AI investment will 鈥渋nitially go to the big tech companies鈥.听
听However, as Jos茅 Ignacio Torreblanca of the European Council on Foreign Relations said, Europe and the rest of the world don鈥檛 necessarily need to lead on AI investment or innovation at this stage, they can catch up across other areas, such as application of AI.听
Meanwhile, Mallory Knodel, Executive Director of the Social Web Foundation, expressed her concern over a general lack of incentive for businesses to cooperate, pointing out AI is currently being developed in silos because of such high competition.听
Talent Arena听听
The imposing entrance of Fira de Montju茂c, with its neo-classical columns, is in sharp contrast to the modern fa莽ade of Fira Gran Via. The inside, however, is 21st century 鈥 scattered with stylish street art and vivid neon. Talent Arena draws a more youthful crowd than MWC, here to show off their skills, find mentors, be inspired and improve their career chances in a competitive industry. Highlights include:听听
- BIEL Smartgaze Glasses: BIEL Glasses use AI, robotics, and geolocation to help those with uncorrectable visual impairments navigate congested spaces. A beep in the ear signals impending collisions, demonstrating how someone with tunnel vision can detect obstacles like bollards and steps.
- scentXP: Olfactory sciences come to life in scentXP鈥檚 demo, run by Puig. One of the Arena鈥檚 most popular stands, visitors eagerly try the fragrance recommender, already in Sephora stores, and AirParfum technology. This tech prevents 鈥榥ose blindness鈥 by wafting fresh air over fragrance bottles to keep smells from fading, making it useful for museums, cultural centres, distilleries, and perfumeries.听

Highlights from last night: Scott Galloway pulls no punches听
Scott Galloway put the 馃敟 in his fireside chat, closing out day one of 秀秀直播 with his characteristically provocative and divisive style.听听
An interesting bookend to a day brimming with positive AI reflections, Galloway held nothing back as he urged the EU to 鈥渟tep up鈥, adding that if the EU got its 鈥渟h*t together and started acting like a Union鈥 [it] could inspire a great new age of European leadership and economic growth鈥.听

The King is in the building听
There was a buzz among the tightly packed crowd as King Felipe VI of Spain took his seat for the opening keynote of 秀秀直播 Barcelona. On stage, we heard from Marc Murtra of Telef贸nica; Sunil Mittal Bharti, Chairperson of Bharti Enterprises; Vicki Brady of Telstra; Biao He, CEO, China Mobile; and Benedicte Fasmer, President and CEO of Telenor Group. The GSMA鈥檚 Mats Granryd celebrated his final year of MWC as Director General, passing the baton to Vivek Badrinath who takes over 1 April 2025.听

4YFN: Come for the epic sci-fi vibes, stay to witness the next tech revolution听
As you step into the iconic at 秀秀直播, there鈥檚 a tangible sense you鈥檙e crossing into the future. Guided through its door by purple neon-drenched corridors, it鈥檚 more Blade Runner meets Tron Legacy, than MWC meets 4YFN.听
It鈥檚 fitting. At 4YFN, you witness first-hand some of the world鈥檚 most exciting breakthroughs from startups dabbling in truly mind-boggling AI across green tech, digital health, deep space technology, and much, much more.听
Take control of a medical robot designed to aid rehabilitation in patients with brain injuries. Or learn about early detection of diseases from startups that use technology to count cells at an individual level to diagnose infections earlier, such as meningitis in newborns.听
Don鈥檛 forget to check out the Award Zone鈥檚 Top 20 startups and five 4YFN Awards finalists. Judged by a panel of leading investors, the five finalists will compete in an intense pitching competition live on the Banco Sabadell stage this Wednesday at 17:00.听听听
